The world is on the brink of a major shift in the way we consume and communicate.
And, in many ways, it’s already happening: Web designers are increasingly being hired in large numbers.
In the past few years, web designers have been hired in huge numbers across all industries, according to an industry-wide survey of over 1,000 designers by consultancy firm Z-Lab.
The survey found that there were more than a billion web designers working in the US alone.
This figure does not include designers at other sites, or companies like Amazon, whose staffs can employ tens of thousands of designers.
It is the first time Z-lab has surveyed designers in such a wide range of industries.
“It’s an incredibly important time for designers,” said Alex Schoen, Z-LAB’s director of design.
“The web is a really great way for designers to learn and grow.”
What’s going on?
“We have seen a massive rise in the number of designers over the past couple of years,” said Schoen.
“I’m not sure if it’s a trend or a new thing or both, but the number has grown substantially.”
The survey was conducted in early 2017 by Z-label, an industry research firm that specialises in hiring, hiring and hiring again.
Z-Label is one of a number of agencies that work with large companies to look at trends in hiring and retention, and is often cited as a major force behind the rise in web design jobs.
Z-lab surveyed a sample of more than 1,500 web designers in the United States.
The sample included both freelance and full-time designers, and covered a wide swath of industries, from healthcare to advertising, marketing and healthcare.
Zlab says that the internet has transformed how designers work.
“We’ve seen that a lot of designers who were not employed in the past will now be, because of the internet,” said Z-Labor’s director.
“There’s more and more of them.”
But some designers say that the job market has been stagnant.
“A lot of people are just not willing to go out and look at different kinds of work,” said Emily Johnson, a designer who has worked for more than 10 years.
“If you want to design a house, you can’t just go out there and buy a house and see what kind of house it will look like.
You have to go to a house.”
The new reality of the job-market landscape may not be as bad as the industry may have previously thought, Johnson said.
“For me, the biggest issue is that I am very much a designer now.
It’s a huge part of who I am, it just wasn’t before.”
But for some designers, this trend is just too much.
“Most designers are working in a very narrow field,” said Johnson.
“And the field I work in is so broad that I can’t really do the things I want to do.”
While it may not always be possible to work in the same industry as your boss, it is possible to find a niche where you can thrive.
“Some designers have an online niche,” said Dr. Laura Dufresne, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Maryland.
“They will look for niche products.
They may go out to buy specific things that they love.
There are lots of creative opportunities to be found online.”
For designers who work in an online job market, this means they can also create content for the web, said Schoon.
“You can do this all on your own.
There’s no pressure, you’re just doing it.”
The internet is also bringing with it a new sense of community.
“People are talking about their careers,” said Shoen.
“This has really been a catalyst for me,” said Dufre.
“Now I can actually connect with people and get advice from people, and it’s been really therapeutic.”
There’s no shortage of advice to be had online, and there’s a community of people who are helping each other, and they’re doing a lot to help designers.

In many ways it’s making it easier for people to have a career,” said one of Z- Lab’s survey participants.
“We’ve been getting a lot more interviews from designers,” added Schoen of Zlab.
“Designers are actually getting more interviews now than they were in the early days of the web.”
“There is so much more of a demand for designers and designers are finding more of these positions,” said Andrew Taggart, director of marketing at the US’s largest designer agency.
“That’s an interesting trend.”
