This is the first in a series of stories about how Reno’s ambitious plan to help the planet keep pace with global warming is transforming our world.
The technology can save us from the worst effects of climate change, but it will also transform our lives and our businesses, said Reno co-founder and chief technology officer Dan Cote, at the TEDxSydney event on Tuesday.
Cote and his co-founders have spent the past three years working on the software’s vision for how the technology could save us, and how it could help businesses to become more environmentally sustainable.
Reno’s vision was developed over the course of the last year and is already being used to save lives in the developing world, Cote said.
“It’s not a game, it’s a system,” Cote told ABC News.
“What we’re trying to do is change the way people think about the world around them.
The future is here, we are creating this world.
It’s not an illusion.
It is here and we are making a difference.”
Cote said Renos goal is to make it easier to live more sustainably.
Renos vision, called Carbon Tracker, is designed to help businesses understand what carbon emissions are and how to curb them.
Cote and co-creator Nick Hirschfeldt, a PhD candidate at Carnegie Mellon University, said they have worked with more than 150 different companies in the US, Canada and around the world.
In an effort to help people and businesses understand how to make the most of their environment, Renos carbon tracker will be able to predict what carbon dioxide levels will be in the atmosphere in just a few hours.
“We have a great technology that can help us know what’s happening in the future, and what’s causing this,” Cotes said.
Renovos vision is that we can predict the amount of carbon dioxide in the air at a given moment in time, he said.
The more carbon dioxide there is in the environment, the more we can affect the world’s climate.
“If you want to make things more efficient, you have to be able do it,” Cokes said.
“Reno is the most powerful tool in the box.”
The technology is currently being tested on a pilot project in New York City.
The goal of Carbon Tracker is to help companies understand what emissions are, how to change the amount and distribution of carbon, and to develop strategies to reduce emissions.
It uses the data that companies collect to predict how much carbon dioxide will be emitted in the next few months and how much of that will be released to the atmosphere.
“Reno will enable people to reduce their carbon footprint,” Cotes said.
Cotes said that Reno is now working with companies like Wal-Mart to help them get started on their carbon-neutral products.
“This is an extremely important shift,” Coti said.
Wal-Mart is testing Reno with products in stores, and will be releasing the software in the coming weeks.
Cotes hopes that this technology will have an impact on companies that do business in developing countries.
“People will see it and say, ‘well, how do you do this?
How do you use this?’
That is a big opportunity,” he said, adding that companies will be “faster to come up with solutions to the carbon footprint.”
